It's Easter egg season! Look no further than your fridge and spice cabinet to make these vibrant, all-natural dyes.
Bring 2 cups of yellow onion skins, 2 of cups water, and 1 tbsp of white vinegar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and cool liquid.
Bring 2 cups of chopped beets, 2 cups of water, and 1 tbsp of white vinegar to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and cool liquid.
Bring 2 cups of water, 1 tbsp of white vinegar, and 2 tbsp of turmeric to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and cool liquid.
Bring 2 cups of chopped red cabbage, 2 cups of water, and 1 tbsp of white vinegar to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and cool liquid.
1. Boil the eggs and let them cool.
2. Make the dye. Don't forget to let it cool before you start dyeing your eggs.
3. Prep the eggs. While the dye cools, use crayons and tape to create designs on the undyed eggs. You can cut the tape in to strips and use it to create stripes, letters, or patterns on the eggs.
4. Dye and dry. Leave the eggs submerged in dye for at least 30 minutes, or over night for more intense color. Place on a wire baking rack to dry.
5. Remove the crayon and tape. After the eggs are dyed and dry, remove the crayon by heating the egg with a blow dryer and then gently wiping off the wax with a towel.
Anything that can dye eggs can also dye clothes, hands, faces, kitchen counters, and anything else it comes in contact with. Keep things clean by spreading newspaper over the workspace and having kids wear rubber gloves and aprons.
For Stain-Free dying, use a glass or ceramic bowl. They are best when it comes to dying eggs. Use plastic only if you have old containers that you don't mind getting stained.
