3 Tips for Great Gravy

No Thanksgiving meal is complete without three little words, “pass the gravy.”
how to cooking tips

Rich and savory, gravy is the ultimate holiday condiment. Fortunately, you only need a handful of inexpensive ingredients to whip up the gravy of your dreams. Check out our three can’t-fail tips for smooth and creamy, intensely flavorful gravy that’s sure to win a boatload of compliments.

Tip 1: Give store-bought broth a flavor boost by simmering it with the turkey neck and wings ahead of time. The convenience of premade turkey or chicken broth combined with the rich taste of browned turkey (or chicken) parts is a one-two punch of fast flavor.

Tip 2: Ideal gravy consistency is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. If your gravy is too runny, make a cornstarch slurry to thicken it. In a separate bowl, stir together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water until smooth. Whisk into gravy and simmer until thickened. Repeat, if necessary.

Tip 3: Got lumps in your gravy even though you whisked it? Use a fine mesh sieve to strain the gravy into a bowl, discarding any lumps left behind.

Whether ladled over turkey and potatoes on the big day, or used for super moist leftover sandwiches the day after—it’s all gravy!
