When Rynn Caputo talks about mozzarella, her eyes light up. “True Italian mozzarella is a star. Most people think it’s forgettable, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. People travel to Naples specifically to eat it there, where it was born. When it’s done right, it’s just that good.”
At Caputo Brothers Creamery in Spring Grove, PA, Mozzarella is done right.
Rynn and her husband, David, founded Caputo Brothers in 2011 as a way to bring their love of authentic Italian cheese to Central Pennsylvania. Here, you’ll find traditional Italian cheeses, made fresh daily – the kind of cheese that begs to be explored and enjoyed. And, tasting is believing. The flavor of pure mozzarella is rich and buttery on the tip of your tongue. As it melts in your mouth, a surprising tang emerges at the back of your palate. Truly, it’s anything but forgettable.
Recently, GIANT has partnered with Caputo Brothers to bring their cheeses to select stores.
Old World Meets New World
The secret ingredient in fresh mozzarella? Fresh milk, of course. When Rynn and David started their business, Central Pennsylvania was an easy pick for its abundance of local dairy farms and its access to major metropolitan markets. “We partner with local farms that are only minutes from our creamery,” Rynn says. “They’re all small farms that provide a clean, delicious, high-quality milk. We bring it back to our creamery and within 15 minutes we begin turning it into cheese.” Combined with fresh milk, Caputo Brothers’ traditional, natural processes produce a cheese that’s hard to beat.
Cheese that Does Good
Caputo Brothers’ cheese doesn’t just taste good; it does good. The truth is, dairy farmers in Central PA are suffering. Conventional milk prices don’t provide them with enough profit to operate. Last year alone, 370 Pennsylvania dairy farmers had to close their doors. The Caputo Brothers model provides an alternative for local farmers that promises to keep many of them in business. Rynn and David currently support two local dairy farms, with plans to expand operations and help as many as they can.
For this passionate husband-and-wife team, it’s not just about cheese anymore. They have their sights set on doing something special for the community and making a micro-economic impact on their friends and neighbors.
An Unexpected Partnership
“Our partnership with GIANT was a surprise,” notes Rynn. “It’s meant the world to us. They literally discovered us and came alongside us and helped us. It’s made an impact on us, and in turn, has made an impact on local dairy farms. ”You can find Caputo Brothers’ fresh mozzarella in select GIANT Cheese Shops. A GIANT associate will be happy to show you a mozzarella stretching demonstration, so you can take home a little bit of Italy, as fresh as it gets.
