The mission of Calabro Cheese can be described in a single word: quality. It’s quality you can see and, most importantly, quality you can taste.
Calabro’s rich, delicate mozzarella has an unmistakable flavor that hearkens back to a simpler time. Whether sliced on a salad or simply enjoyed with salt, pepper, and a splash of olive oil, this is a cheese that shines because of its simplicity.
Now in its third generation of family leadership, Calabro got its start in the sprawling mountains of Sicily – a place filled with natural beauty and an abundance of fresh milk. Soon after immigrating to the U.S. and settling in East Haven, Conn, Calabro began supplying its award-winning mozzarellas, ricottas, mascarpone and more to Stop & Shop.
“We’ve had a close relationship with Stop & Shop for nearly six decades,” says Frank Angeloni, Calabro’s president and CEO, and grandson to the company’s founder. “As Stop & Shop grew, we grew with them.”
And that growth, Frank adds, shows no signs of slowing. Calabro recently added a new truck to its delivery fleet and hired two new drivers just to supply Stop & Shop stores throughout New England and parts of New York and New Jersey.
Innovators at Heart
It might not seem like there’s much room for innovation in an industry that’s defined by its simplicity, but for Calabro’s, creating new products – and new ways to enjoy the time-honored tradition of fresh, local cheese – is key. Calabro was the first Italian cheesemaker in the U.S. to offer an organic product line. The company also invented the mozzarella log as a portion-friendly alternative to traditional mozzarella balls.
Family Cheesemakers, Family Dairies
No matter the shape it takes, Calabro’s fresh, delicious mozzarella all starts with a fundamental ingredient: fresh, local milk. Through their partnership with Connecticut dairies, Calabro has supported family businesses for decades. Milk for the company’s organic mozzarella is provided by a single organic dairy farm, Segalla’s Farm in nearby New Canaan, Conn.
People Behind the Process
While local milk gives Calabro’s fresh mozzarella its unique flavor, another equally important ingredient drives the company: its people. Many of Calabro’s employees have worked at the company for 25 years or more, and Frank considers them all family.
“We treat every aspect of our business – and every person in it – with dignity, pride and respect. Our employees share that pride. And it’s reflected in every product we make.”
Look for Calabro’s fresh mozzarella, ricotta, mascarpone and more at select Stop & Shop stores and take home a delicious taste of Italy, fresh from local farms.
