Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to fill up the candy bowl and pull together an awesome costume. Luckily, you can take care of both with one quick trip to the grocery store. Forget pricey one-time use costumes; these five DIY ensembles are easy to pull off using everyday food items, a little glue, and some imagination.
Cereal Isle
We can’t resist a good food pun…especially if it involves everyone’s favorite breakfast. Begin by gluing or taping miniature boxes of breakfast cereal (variety packs work well here) in rows on a white tee-shirt. Then, add your favorite tropical vacation gear—a Hawaiian shirt, straw hat, sunglasses, etc!—and turn heads as the “cereal isle.”
Cotton Candy
This one might stump people, so give folks time to figure it out. Glue pieces of candy to a cotton tee-shirt. And that’s it. You’re cotton candy! You can add a few cotton balls if you want to give an extra clue.
Caesar Salad
All hail the king of salads! To make this funny mashup costume, begin with a white tablecloth or bed sheet and fashion it into a toga. To finish it off, simply grab a head of lettuce. You’ll have to carry it around all night, but it will be worth it.
Sandwitch
This punny costume is a fun way to re-purpose accessories from a previous Halloween. Just attach two pieces of bread to either side of a witch hat, and complete the look with a black dress and broomstick. No one will be scared—maybe just hungry—when they see a sandwitch walk into the party.
Chilly Pepper
If the temps are dropping where you live, we have an incredible practical costume: Don a bunch of layers (scarf, mittens, and hat encouraged!) and arrange it so that some jars of ground pepper are poking out of our pockets. You can even tape some to the outside of your clothing. You’re a chilly pepper. Get it?!
