Plant-Based Meat Q&A

By now you’ve likely heard of plant-based or vegetarian meat products and seen them at your store. But what are they made of? And, more importantly, do they taste good? We’ve got the answers to all your plant-based meat questions.

What’s in plant-based meat?

  • Leading plant-based meat brands use ingredients like soy protein, potato protein, pea protein, and coconut and canola oils.

How does the nutrition compare to meat?

  • Plant-based meats have about the same amounts of calories and fat as real meat, and are higher in fiber. They’re also a great source of protein. For example, vegetarian meats have 16g to 20g protein per serving, which is comparable to beef and sausages.

What does plant-based meat taste like?

  • The flavor of these meat alternatives is very close to real meat with lots of umami (a savory, satisfying taste). They also have a similar meaty texture and brown just like beef and sausage.

What’s the best way to cook plant-based meat?

  • Grill meatless sausages whole or slice at an angle and sauté until browned and heated through. Sear or grill patties just like beef burgers for 3-4 minutes per side. Cook crumbles in a skillet until heated through.
