How to choose the best watermelon

  • Look for fruit that’s heavy and symmetrical, an indication that it’s sweet and full of juice.

  • A hollow sound when you knock on the side is another sign that a watermelon is fully ripe.

  • If you see an area that’s faded or yellow in color, don’t worry

  • That’s just a field spot, where the melon rested against the ground while growing. It’s still full of flavor.

How to prep watermelon like a pro

Start by taking a thin, level slice off of both small ends to create a flat surface.

  • For cubes: Rest the watermelon upright on one cut end and remove the rind by making a one-to-two-inch deep slice along the full length of the fruit. Repeat, moving around the circumference of the watermelon until the rind is completely removed.  Next, cut the watermelon in half crosswise. From each half, cut planks that are the desired thickness of your cubes. Stack planks and cut batons to your desired thickness. Turn slices 90 degrees and repeat to create cubes.
  • For wedges: Slice watermelon in half lengthwise.  Lay watermelon on the cutting board cut side down, and slice each half down the middle lengthwise. Turn watermelon 90 degrees and make even slices crosswise to create wedges.
  • For sticks: Slice watermelon in half lengthwise. Lay watermelon on the cutting board cut side down, and make even slices across the entire length of the fruit. Turn watermelon 90 degrees and repeat with crosswise slices to create sticks.

Chili-Lime Watermelon Wedges

Mexican street food inspired these one-of-a-kind wedges that combine sweet, sour, and spicy. Chili-lime seasoning and fresh citrus juice add new dimension to wedges of ripe summer watermelon. For an extra flavor kick, finish with a sprinkle of tangy cotija cheese and fresh mint.

Watermelon, Tuna, and Feta Salad

This unexpected mix of tastes and textures might become your go-to summer salad. Tuna tossed with crisp watermelon and cucumbers and the briny tang of feta and olives makes a light, protein-packed meal or side that’s perfect for picnics and cookouts.

Watermelon Punch

This refreshing sip with watermelon, fresh basil, and lemonade has a time-saving hack. Blending the watermelon whole inside the rind shortcuts prep and creates a naturally decorative punch bowl for serving.
