From Farm to Fridge
Our goal is to build a sustainable supply chain for fresh milk and dairy products. We work every day to help create a system that is good for our environment, good for dairy farmers, and good for the beautiful black and white cows who give us all that delicious fresh milk.
To help us do that, Giant Food works with two regional conservation groups to help supply chain members and dairy farmers. Our mutual aim is to accelerate sustainability efforts throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Through our combined efforts, farms can remain sustainable and at the same time elevate environmental standards throughout the dairy industry. That requires a very special collaboration.
The Giant Clean Water Partnership is comprised of Giant Food, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association. We work together to support local dairy farmers throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed to improve both land and water.
Part of the Giant Culture of Care is to provide visibility into how we are all connected to each other. Most folks don’t realize that the rainwater in their backyard drains to a local creek, which drains to a larger river, and ultimately into the Chesapeake Bay. In short, everybody lives downstream of somebody. That’s why it matters so much that all members of the supply chain work together for better environmental outcomes.
Millions of Mouths to Feed
More than 18 Million people live in this watershed. That means many perspectives and diverse uses all need to be considered and respected. Our objective is to stitch the many ecosystems back together. Part of how we do that is by providing local dairy farmers who supply our milk with the resources they need to improve local water quality and ensure environmental conservation.
Achieving these disparate goals requires cooperation and team work among many like-minded, forward-thinking people. Our efforts include planting trees to prevent erosion along waterways. We work to restore streams and improve water quality. We help farmers take the simple but critical steps needed to support dairy cows. Giant Clean Water Partnership is just one step in our journey toward a sustainable future.
